Outdoor skating rinks have become very popular in recent years and can be great fun, either for a romantic get together or a family outing. There is something much more magical about outdoor rinks, particularly when darkness has started to fall and Christmas lights are twinkling in the dusky light.
If you fancy giving it a twirl on the ice this year, you can head off to the following venues.
Bristol, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway
16th November 2006 to 7th January 2007
Bigger and better than last year, the rink can now accommodate up to 150 people. Booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Tel: 0117 915 5555
Leeds, The Ice Cube at Leeds Millennium Square
13th January 2007 to mid March 2007
The UK’s largest outside ice-skating rink – sadly not in time for Christmas, but it should be great fun anyway.
London, Somerset House Ice Rink
November 22nd 2006 to January 28th 2007
The rink is in the courtyard of Somerset House, off the Strand and makes for a very romantic and spectacular location.
London, Hampstead Heath Ice Rink
December 2nd 2006 to January 14th 2007
A fabulous open-air rink at Parliament Hill Fields, with an adjacent café if you forget the flask of hot chocolate!
Keep your feet on the ground
Alternatively, if you prefer to be in complete control of where your feet are going, grab your boots and get out for a walk instead. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise we can take and country walking in particular is good for strengthening muscles.
The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs have a searchable database of country walks, so you can easily find something near you.
